How to Blend Online College Classes With Traditional College Classes

There are many benefits to both online classes and traditional face-to-face classes. Online classes offer flexibility and the ability to work at your on pace, while traditional classes give you a chance to learn from others in the classroom during discussion time. Many college students find that a combination of the two gives them the best learning environment, the most flexibility and a chance to take a variety of classes.

To get the advantages of both types of classes, choose the classes according to what you most need to learn from the class. Is the subject one that you are likely to need extra time to study for? An online class will give you this flexibility. If the subject is one that you may need hands-on help with, you may be tempted to take the face-to-face class, but remember: the instructor is available to you by email, and most instructors of online classes also keep regular office hours. You still may be able to get hands-on help from an online course.

Classes where there will be lively discussion are excellent for taking in the traditional setting. Speech classes, psychology, sociology and religion have a social element that makes them excellent candidates for taking in traditional classrooms. Also, classes with a high show-and-tell value are good for taking in the classroom. Anatomy, chemistry and biology, for instance, are sometimes easier to understand when you are in the classroom with the instructor.

Highly technical classes are good candidates for online classes. Most technical fields have embraced online learning more quickly than some other disciplines have. The internet is a rich source of information for almost all things technical, and it is usually fairly easy to find good sites for researching these subjects.

About 30 percent of all college students take at least one class online. The number of online classes you choose to take should depend on your needs as a student. If you are self-motivated, work well on your own and do not require much face-to-face interaction for optimal learning, then online classes will surely prove to be an excellent alternative. Many students are able to work full-time jobs due to the flexibility of online courses. If you need a little motivation and thrive on social contact, take most of your classes in traditional classrooms and use online classes to fill out your schedule.

Another excellent option for many students is online classes that meet periodically. These blended classes put most of the coursework online, but meet from time to time to touch base with the instructor and other students. These blended classes help many students stay on track and prevents them from feeling completely alone during the class.
