Artists looking for the ideal college degree will want to look into a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This degree is called a BFA, and is an undergraduate degree you can earn online. Students seek out a concentration in either a visual or performing art. The degree includes many studio hours as opposed to strict classroom hours. In addition to their chosen concentration in the arts, students will also study liberal arts.
Bachelor of Fine Arts graduates can enjoy careers in television, theatre, animation, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, film, screenwriting, drawing, painting, printmaking and more. Many artists go on to run their own studios after graduation.
A Master of Fine Arts is also available for advanced study. Artists who want to step up their earning power while still doing a job they love enter the advanced Master's program. They typically choose their concentration from among painting, sculpture, drawing, or print making. Their final work is evaluated by a group of faculty who are also professional artists. A final review is done and the student is granted their degree once they have shown their degree of excellence.
Most programs require a portfolio as an exit criterion. This is a valuable collection of a student's best work throughout the degree program. It can include photographs or videos of dance, paintings, cartoons done by the student, fiber arts, films and more. The portfolio serves as a way for employers to evaluate the scope and level of the artist's knowledge and creativity.
Unlike many other degree programs, the Bachelor or Master of Fine Arts requires a true love of art, but also a practice in some form of the craft of art. The degree can be earned online with slides, photos or originals of work being shown to the instructor for evaluation and critique. A Bachelor of Fine arts cannot be rushed through as there are many hours of studio work necessary to produce the final products that will be evaluated. The degree holds much prestige in the art world and opens many career opportunities to creative graduates.
