A degree in English can be a great idea for a student who wants to become a teacher. There are many other uses for a degree in English as well. You can become a writer or you can use your Bachelor's degree in English as a basis for getting into Law School.
Today's teachers who come with English backgrounds are in high demand. Many schools are being looked at by higher ups and are being asked to do better in teaching English. Most candidates who come to an Education program with an English degree already have their Bachelor of Arts in English. The next step is to enroll in a Masters level program in Education. You might also consider teaching English to students whose first language is not English. These students are called English Language Learners. ELL students make up the bulk of minority populations in schools today. Many students will come to public school knowing no English at all. Your degree in teaching ELL students will help you quickly get a job that will allow you to instruct them.
English is a great base for any teaching degree whether you go on to earn a Master's degree in teaching history, social studies, middle grades or elementary subjects. You can specialize in any subject you'd like for your Masters in Education.

Another huge area to consider working in is teaching English to foreign businesspeople. Since much of international business is conducted in English, native English speakers are sought out to teach English conversation skills.
