Health and Cultural Diversity is a specialization within the sciences that allows you to understand the issues that ethnic groups face in relation to health care. You will be helping to manage the differences in culture and communication styles that can make getting proper health care a challenge.
Patients of every background and ethnicity will come through the doors of a hospital. You will be in charge of providing services and programs to individuals that respect and attend to their cultural differences. You will help with language barriers, pain reduction, stress management and more.
You may find yourself at a nonprofit agency suggesting new policies that allow underserved groups of people advantages to getting proper healthcare. You may work for organizations that champion the cause of a certain ethnic group, or you may start a new organization yourself. You will help to create meaningful change for people whose voices have gone unheard.
Some cultures have a fear of doctors and hospitals. Others have been discriminated against based on their ethnic background or culture. As a Health and Cultural Diversity specialist, you will be able to address the social, physical and mental aspects of a patient and provide services that value them as individuals regardless of their ethnicity.
You will not only help patients that are already sick, but you will help devise programs that allow a specific population to stay balanced and well within their neighborhoods or groups. You may have to work against superstitions and long-held beliefs in old wives tales. You will provide information to both the individuals and the staff where they are treated for illness.
As a Health and Cultural Diversity specialist, you will need your advanced degree, usually in Nursing. With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, you can go on to earn a Master's of Doctoral degree in Health and Cultural Diversity to further your career. You will be an asset to any hospital or organization as lawmakers struggle to make policies that accommodate all people.
