Social Services includes many different job titles. When you start out in a career in Social Services, you will want to have a sincere desire to work with underprivileged people within your community. You may be a social worker or you may be in management. But either way, your work will have a direct impact on the lives of people in your area.
Some of the job titles you might strive towards are gerontology specialist (working with the elderly), child advocate, psychiatric aide, youth worker, life skills aide or counselor, case manager, mental health aide, human services advocate. Some employers may title one job differently than another employer would. Names are always changing. But the jobs are all aimed at advocating for patients either in the hospital or mental health setting or out in the community.
You may choose to work for the Department of Children and Families. You may be the one person that a child gets to tell their story to about the treatment they are receiving at home. You may be able to step in and get them help and stop an abusive situation. You may also be a guardian or foster care figure in cases where children are removed from the home for various detrimental situations.
Your work will be challenging, rewarding and demanding. If you truly want to be out there among the troubled people to help them get their lives back on track, this is the career path for you. You might work in a hospital or a clinic, a group home for the mentally disabled, a women's shelter, a homeless shelter, or a day program for the elderly.
Opportunities abound as there is always a need for qualified Social Services workers. You will always have a job to go to and with your degree, you can work your way up to Management and even start programs of your own for the good of the public. You will find that Social Services is one of the most rewarding careers you can choose.
Earn a Bachelor, Master or Doctoral degree in Social Sciences and you will find that rehabilitation centers, psychiatric clinics, behavioral health centers and hospitals all want to hire you for your expertise. With the world in the condition it is in today, your services will be much appreciated and necessary now and into the future. So expect a long and varied career.
