Speech and Language is a field that needs more and more trained professionals every day. Schools and hospitals as well as private organizations need qualified Speech instructors for children and adults with language impairments or issues.
Speech and Language therapists may also be called Speech and Language pathologists. The terms are interchangeable. As a qualified therapist, you will work with people who are having difficulty with their speech either from birth or from an accident. You will help people who stutter, have a voice disorder or who cannot understand language. You may also work with people who are learning a new language and want to help improve their accent or those who have experienced memory loss from a stroke or other accident.
The field of Speech and Language is very challenging and rewarding. As more and more children are being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, you will find that schools and rehabilitation centers that provide services for children will want to hire you. You will evaluate each person who comes in and help them and their parents work on their communication. Sometimes you will help them with sign language or with writing. You will also do some therapy to help them control their muscles so they can speak more clearly and avoid swallowing issues.
You may be helping to rehabilitate an accident victim who has lost his speech due to a brain trauma. You will help patients get back their abilities to live and work on their own. You will see patients either in a school or clinical setting. You may also choose to open your own practice. Either way, your day will be spent working directly with patients, therapists, psychologists, social workers and doctors.
Your career will be long and exciting when you get your degree in Speech and Language therapy. You will find opportunities abound and the salary range is superb. It is one of the most helpful and rewarding health sciences to go into as you will see people improve every time you meet with them.
You may choose to go on to your Master or Doctoral degree in Speech and Language or you may just earn your Bachelor of Science degree.
